Inconsistent emoji fonts

Depending on which fonts are installed on the user's system, it's possible to end up in a situation where the emojis are all displayed correctly in the emoji picker, but not elsewhere, e.g. in the message bar:
A very similar issue was closed one year ago (#896 (closed)) following this commit (b8b0cb87). I'm not sure if the issue was closed prematurely or if this is a regression caused by somethings else.
Link items together to show that they're related or that one is blocking others.
