[Windows 10] No Audio as Standard User

System Info:

• Asus Rog Strix X570-F Gaming
• AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
• 16GB G.Skill Flare X DDR4-3200 C14 DC

Sound devices:

• Onboard - Realtek Audio
• HDMI - Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti
• USB – USB Sound Device (unknown)

Operating System:

• Windows 10 Pro 20H2 (19042.1348)

None of the sound devices listed above are outputting any audio from Jami (and Jami isn’t shown in the Volume Mixer - see images below), unless Jami is executing with "Run as administrator".

The account used to run Jami on this Windows machine is a "Standard user" and the systems "Administrator" account has been activated and given a new password.

The location Jami is installed doesn’t seem to have any influence on the issue.

This issue seems to have been fixed. I haven't tested since the issue was created, but today the sound is working without administrator permission, running version 202209161341

When I created this issue, I was testing the sound over HDMI from an Nvidia Geforce 780 ti card. There the sound was only working with administrator permission.

Now I'm using HDMI from a Radeon RX 6600 card and the issue is upper set. Now there is only sound when running Jami without administrator permission. Thus, I believe the issue has been solved in one of the latest updates.

I made a mistake. It was not the HDMI that was used when creating this issue. It was the on-board RealTek card and there is still only sound when starting Jami as administrator.

Maybe this is completely unrelated: (Just a (random) guess) But where did you install Jami (for example C:;D: or elsewhere)?

Because when it comes to file transfer for example Jami needs to create a symlink and Windows 10 only allows you to create symlinks if you launch a program as an admin (Issue jami-client-qt#681 (closed) )?

If you install Jami on a different drive - does this change anything?

I have already tried to install it on another drive without any difference. I still need to use Run as Administrator to get any audio from Jami.

As mentioned in the thread, my Windows setup differs from a normal install. I have hardened the access further by changing the default Administrator User to a Standard User and enabling the Administrator account as a separate user with another password. That means that every time my (standard) user needs administrator access I need to type a different password than the one I use to login with.

I think the issue happens because I'm not using the default user account (with administrator privileges), the one created when Windows is installing.
