My voip provider can send texts to my desktop if I have a client for that purpose. A search brought up the name of Jami. Will it work for that purpose?

SMS works both way (actually tested on 2 providers, I use it with voip.ms both incoming/outgoing). In VoIP.ms I just had to buy a DiD + enable SMS (it's a checkbox which is disabled by default).
I have the same DiD and enabled SMS, but it doesn't work as you describe, so there is more to it.
On my current configuration, it looks like sending a message goes through and updates the SMS database, on the server.
However incoming messages are not retrieved.
What is the configuration on the Jami side you are using?
And anything in particular provider side beyond the obvious of enabling SMS?
I am using UDP, reflected in both Jami and server. Made no changes to Jami account settings.
So are you saying you set up encryption???
The UDP is not updating SMS messages... is there a reason it doesn't work for UDP? security?
I'll consider trying encryption (TLS), but just want to understand the UDP configuration and if that is the limiting factor.
Nothing wrong with simple. If it ain't broke...
Is it an answer that it's because it's common in 2023? If UDP is not supported, then ok. But let's call a spade a spade. No mind readers here.
Not all use cases have the same conditions.
Also precision and specification is helpful.
Consider the contradictory posts from earlier (from SIP is unsupported to just "enable SMS" and it all works!).
Thank you!
UDP is supported. Just that you will be subject to UDP limitations (packet loss, blocked by some, etc).
But on current version on Jami for VoIP.ms this is what I do for both UDP and TCP:
TLS: VoIP.ms recommended server (montreal9.voip.ms) / my user & password / TLS (both in Jami (in the account creation, create by selecting TLS) and has to be enabled in voip.ms interface too (Account settings, advanced, encrypt SIP traffic) and all default in Jami.
UDP: VoIP.ms recommended server (montreal9.voip.ms) / my user & password / TLS disabled (both in Jami (in the account creation, create by selecting UDP) and has to be disabled in voip.ms interface too (Account settings, advanced, encrypt SIP traffic) and all default in Jami.
SMS support must be enabled too in VoIP.ms (+ DID). And they even offer a message center to check if it's working: https://voip.ms/m/communications.php
But this is only correct for VoIP.ms, other providers can have different things supported or not.
Both incoming and outgoing SMS are received by Jami in both configuration.
If not and if it's a bug, a proper bug report should be filled (version used, ideally some logs or at least a minimal scenario we can reproduce on our hand).
No. I use it with several SIP provider. I only add details about VoIP.ms because every SIP provider as a different web interface to configure the account and I don't know all of them. But they generally offer a guide on how to configure an account.
I also use a bare asterisk server at work without issue (without video and DID configured)
