the current AppStream description is weak and does not clearly describe Jami.
0001-Improve-AppStream-description.patch is a patch to improve Jami's AppStream description to give users a better idea of the package and list Jami's key features.

I tried to put myself in less experienced users' shoes: I've observed technically less experienced people who refer to arbitrary video call or conference solutions as, e.g., "Skype". So the idea is, if people know what Skype (or WhatsApp, etc.) does, then let's explain to them what Jami can provide with words they know.
There has also been recent discussion/suggestions by some Debian folks at https://bugs.debian.org/979492. Further, separately, a few other folks in our #jami IRC channel on freenode have also been discussing and brainstorming about this, and collecting thoughts and some anonymized chat logs in an etherpad at https://yopad.eu/p/Jami_Slogan.
We should review and consider all of these suggestions before making a decision.
The Debian folks who filed the bug is me :) The phrasing in both patches I submitted here and in the Debian bug tracker are almost the same.
With respect to the compiled IRC discussions @abandali shared, it seems there is no common understanding of the target audience, i.e., nerds or casual users, and so on. I'd recommend to focus on less experienced and casual users, because the technical skilled ones and nerds either know Jami already or will find it without any help. I'm aware my patch isn't perfect, no doubt about that.
However, I suggest to proceed step by step instead of trying to find a perfect solution.
Thanks for your comments and suggestions :-). I merged them with some small tweaks. I definitely agree that we should take this one step at a time rather than aiming to land at a perfect solution at once.
I'll likely close this issue but please feel free to open new ones and/or send patches for further improvements directly to our Gerrit at https://review.jami.net.
