Feature request: see the video preview (of the caller) before you accept the call

all supported OS:

It would be great if you (the receiver) were able to see a video preview (of the caller) before you accept the call for example if you tap a button ("accept the call") on a touchscreen and holding it down for a few seconds.

Or another (new) button.

It's indeed wanted since a long time but need a lot of changes

Great! Maybe in the future / next years you can implement this idea (and maybe the option to disable the video preview by the caller)

Can you add my idea to the page of features requests so we can close this thread?

For now it would be great if the developers can fix these screen lag issues jami-client-qt#403.

Regarding a conference:

If you are a moderator you can accept the user to join the conference BUT the new user is not able to use his camera and/or mircophone - just the text-chat. See: #1349 (moved)

But what will happen if the caller disables video while you see the video preview or changes the camera which is using a different resolution and framerate? EDIT: Or even suddenly enables / disables hardware acceleration (just one peer: See issue jami-client-qt#763 (closed))?

If one peer disables video (generally or suddenly) will you get an error message like "Peer disabled video"? (#1476 (closed))

What will happen if one peer suddenly enables the camera during the (audio) call (1:1 call, conference, Swarm-Calls)?

EDIT: Regarding Multi-Stream?

If one user shares webcam and his screen at the same time will you actually see 2 videos? What happens if he disables one?

So Multistream will show both? webcam + shared screen?

no, the default video is the camera anyway and you only answer with 1 stream at the beginiing.

For video, it's only stop video negotiation, but preview should be black as you can only answer in audio

Can you actually change the resolution, framerate of the camera and/or the camera (webcam 1-> webcam 2-> virtual cam) itself while you initiate a video call?

Or even disable video while you initiate a video call?

Or enable/disable hardware acceleration while you initiate the video call?

Will Jami / the video preview change the resolution and/or framerate?

yeah, if video is disabled (so there will be just answer in audio), there should be no video-preview. The rest is just out-of-context

I actually meant that the caller or you disables the video while one initiates a video call? Although probably not the common case, I get a few issues (#1476 (closed))

What happens if just one peer disabled video?

And what happens if you choose answer in audio (but the caller uses a webcam and/or a shared screen)?

EDIT: So if you make a 1:1 video call with a shared screen (no camera) you get no preview? (Unless you use a VirtualCam to share your screen?)

All OS? So if you share your screen on Android Jami on Windows 10 will also show no preview?

Intercom call from Android to GNU/Linux doesn't show the video.

The background is not black, but seems to be some pixelated grey. Image shown below:

Actual result

1. client-qt video camera turns on in the incoming video call (not yet refused, accept in audio, accept in video)
2. client-qt is showing a video preview of client-qt

Expected result

1. client-qt video camera should not turns on, i.e. remain off in the incoming video call (not yet refused, accept in audio, accept in video)
2. client-qt should show a video preview of client-android

Are you able to reproduce and please fix?

the camera is turning on, only to prepare yourself, while you don't accept the call, you don't see the video from the peer.

Has Incoming video call preview been implemented on Android and macOS too? If not:

1. Should Incoming video call preview be added to https://docs.jami.net/user/all-features-by-client.html
2. Should this issue be re-opened until the other platforms support this feature

Actually, it was discussed and showing the preview of the caller is a no-go for us. You see your preview before answering. Handling early-medias is not planned

OK - let's keep this issue closed ... if new / other developers change this decision one time they can reopen.
